Update on health care law
Share |

The Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, is one of the most significant non-boating issues of interest to small businesses. Most small businesses are concerned just how affordable the new health care law will be.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the challenge to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act from March 26-28. The arguments were scheduled for 5.5 total hours over the three days, which is the longest time devoted to listening to oral arguments in well over 100 years. As a reminder, the case was brought by the attorneys general of 26 states and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

The Court could issue a ruling at any time now that the hearing has concluded, but it is most likely to be sometime at the end of its term in late June. It is very hard to predict the ruling, but with a 5-4 majority of conservative judges who are not afraid to rule against precedent and even rule of law, many in D.C. are optimistic that, at least parts of the law will be struck. Stay tuned.
